Therefore, the surface characterization of the hot-pressed beryllium was examined by X-rays photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) after vacuum heating and deuterium ion bombardment. On the surface of the as-received sample, carbon, fluorine, oxygen and beryllium were observed. However, carbon that is sure to be adsorbed and fluorine that was mixed as an impurity during fabrication process decreased to a great extent by heating, and both elements (carbon and fluorine) were barely observed after heating at 800℃for 20 min. From the element-abundance-ratio of Be to O and ratio of the two peaks of Be 1s, it was obvious that surface of hot-pressed beryllium was covered by two parts of Be and one of BeO due to heating at 800℃ for 20 min.
