Effect of microstructure of the material on the crack initiation and growth behavior was also studied using an atomic force microscope, AFM. Small crack with a length of 1-2μm initiates at grain boundary in the very early stage of fatigue life, N/N_f=6-10%. So the fatigue life is almost considered as a crack propagation life. The initiated crack propagated very slowly along the grain boundary especially at the lower stress amplitude region.
