The domains being scientific, qualities such as abstractness, logicality, precision, and exactness are considered necessary in our language education, while from this, it does not follow that materials we use in classes ought to be especially related to their respective fields. With academic knowledge primarily conveyed by written words, practice in reading is of prlmary importance. The method of intensive reading seems preferable, where grammatical explanations can be of great help to students. In addition, this reading practice will help to build foundations for all other facets of verbal communication.\nWhen we write English, what counts seems to be the ability to know if it is English, to know if what we are writing is like what a native writer of English would be writing. The accumulation of the experience of reading is perhaps the only way of enbanclng this ability. When we listen to English, our comprehension is undeniably dependent on a stock o fknowledge we have of English words and expressions, but far less onskills we have in recognizing on a physical basis the sounds there being involved. Hence the need of practice in reading. As regards the speaking of English, too, expressions necessary for doing this can be learned from our reading, and with efficiency at that. We bad better not lay too much emphasis on firsthand experience in conversation. Lastly, this writer wants himself understood as basically a believer in the pursuit of `practicality' in English study, who, however, considers that our program here should have one distinctive characteristic which is really suited to this particular university.
