Using a qualitative descriptive case study design with a narrative approach, growth was analyzed from the narratives of 5 nurses in their second year of employment, and themes were identified. The results indicated growth with the following themes.\n1 ）Themes in N1 cases: Acquiring knowledge and skills and becoming part of the nursing group, Importance of listening to what patients say, Dealing with emergency surgeries during night shifts, and Desire for better prediction ability\n2 ）Themes in N2 cases: Confidence from the recognition of senior nurses, Having an outlook of nurturing first-year nurses, Even small things may lead to critical situations that impact life, Involvement with patients and their family based on one's own decisions, and Desire to take steps toward being an autonomous nurse\n3 ）Themes in N3 cases: Difficulty of providing care that makes allowances for patients' feelings, Obtaining a response when care is provided properly, Support for the family will come back to the patient, Increasing the things that one can make happen, and One learns the most in times of difficulty\n4 ）Themes in N4 cases: Current self is at the half-way point up the mountain, Continuing the relationship between patient and nurse, and Must get into a person’s mind to understand them\n5 ）Themes in N5 cases: Doing things properly on the ward, What is it that nurses can do better?, Unwanted outcomes can perhaps be prevented with greater attention, Sputum collection done with utmost care, and Desire for knowledge and experience to understand “if this occurs, I can do this”\nEach step of growth seen from the narratives of novice nurses is tied to individual background and environment, and is thought to show their paths in forming value standards and a nursing
