The subjects were family members of 13 people who were being seen regularly at psychiatric clinics. The following results were obtained from analysis of their statements.\n1. The thoughts of family members were classified into six categories. There were two categories with negative psychological and social meanings: \"difficulties from the patient's illness, \"and\" isolation from surroundings\"; and four categories with positive psychological and social meanings, \"advantages obtained from ties with others,\" \"one's own growth,\" \"efforts to work through difficulties,\" and \"existence of hope.\"\n2. Family members who live with a psychiatric disease patient and experience difficulties in daily life possessed thoughts and feelings such as \"troubles from the patient's disease,\" which expressed various psychological burdens, and \"isolation from bias\" that was held by surrounding people or the family member him- or herself. However, their thoughts did not have these negative psychological and social aspects only. There were also positive aspects such as the mental assurance and help expressed by \"advantages obtained from ties with others. \"They acquired strength through the disease of the patient and felt their outlook broaden. They also felt their own growth and had feelings of thanks to the people around them.
