There were as much as 149 responders (23%) with either symptom of the immediate type allergy (ITA), which showed a workplace-related tendency (operation room) in relatively younger nurses. ITA was induced by either direct or indirect contact of latex products (glove-wearing, contact of balloon or intervention of dentists) at the highest risk ( 19%). The most popular measure for the ITA control was the use of the lotion or humidified creams (79%) rather than consulting with doctors (44%) or avoiding the glove use (35%). One of 3 facilities has already carried out facility-wide substitution of powder-free latex or nitryl gloves, whereas the remaining two facilities have not yet. In addition to inappropriate glove use, personnel with ITA also complained with the dishpan hands (60%) and delayed type allergy (23%), indicating that they work routinely with various risks for latex allergy. Serologic tests of 89 responders showed that one of 2 persons with a high level of latex-specific IgE is asymtomatic, suggesting that serologic test is useful for the evaluation and control of healthcare personnel on the basis of latex allergy.
