One-hundred-twenty-eight junior high school students in Toyama, Japan participated in the study and watched approximately five minutes of a YouTube video without subtitles. This was accompanied with comprehension tasks and pre- and post-viewing activities. A questionnaire was administered after the lessons, and factor analysis, single linear regression, and mediation analysis were carried out. The results of the analyses suggested that effective use of YouTube videos in EFL classrooms could increase students\u0027 motivation, while YouTube videos alone may not directly motivate students.
