Over an 11-month period (December 2010 to November 2011), in a survey conducted for 600 teachers, a total of 153 teachers (26% collection rate) completed the survey about their awareness of special needs and their experience teaching students about wheelchair use.\nAmong them, 75 teachers reported that they had implemented wheelchair exercises in class. Many had developed the activity on their own and conducted it in an integrated learning period. Thirty-five percent of the teachers taught the activity by themselves, and 65% brought in outside help. In many cases, teachers reported the total activity length as less than 10 minutes for the students to ride the wheelchair, help others use it, and be helped while using it. It was also found that, in some cases, the teachers did not provide necessary information in order to prevent accidents, such as describing the wheelchair mechanism and how to maneuver properly.
